What is the skinny jab and how does it work?

0

Have you ever heard of the weight loss jab called “Skinny Jab” – a new weight-loss craze touted by reality TV faces such as Gemma Collins and Kerry Katona. But what exactly is this quick-fix jab, what does it do, and most importantly – is it safe?

Skinny Jab is an at-home injection of the drug ‘liraglutide’. It’s injected by the customer into the stomach, and is administered either daily or weekly – depending on the customer’s weight loss goals.

Liraglutide, branded as ‘Victoza’ was originally created by global pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk as a treatment for people with Type 2 diabetes. It works by helping the body stabilize blood sugar levels. A higher dose of liraglutide, ‘Saxenda’, has been licensed for obesity treatment by private weight clinics in the UK – with the aim to help control hunger. By stabilizing blood glucose levels, your appetite decreases, meaning less food consumption and a lower calorie intake.

Whilst weight-loss injections can be a legitimate option for certain people, it’s important to remember this is not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ miracle cure – people’s bodies react differently to the drug. Some people may not experience a large reduction in weight.

In order to take Skinny Jab, customers must undergo a medical consultation and clinical assessment to ascertain suitability, and if you’re found to be suitable, you will be placed on a four week plan, which can cost you £250 for daily injections or £500 for the stronger, weekly dose. After that, top up injections are £175 for the daily dose, and £400 for the weekly.

Trials conducted on the use of Skinny Jab have reported significantly high success rates – but all in conjunction with healthier eating and a regular exercise routine. As with all fad weight-loss solutions, the answer alway seems to circle back to diet and exercise being the most viable option for weight-loss. It’s cheaper, has better health benefits, and makes it easier to maintain weight loss long-term.

There are some side effects with the Skinny Jab such as experiencing a period of Nausea but the injection is proven to be safe and there are no long term side effects. While the skinny jab is a good solution for weight loss, doing exercise and having a healthy diet is the most important factor to lose weight.
