What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure used to remove unwanted fat in the body. It involves removing small fat areas that can’t be lost through a healthy diet or exercise. It is done on areas of the body where fat collects, such as hips, thighs, buttocks, and tummy. Liposuction also shapes these areas.

Uses of Liposuction

Liposuction is mostly used to improve appearance but not providing physical health benefits. Many people achieve better results by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, a balanced diet, and healthy sleeping schedules.

Liposuction is advised if lifestyle changes have not achieved the desired results. It treats areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction works best in people with elasticity, where the skin molds itself to a new contour.

Liposuction benefits

Liposuction is used for cosmetic purposes, but sometimes it is used to treat certain conditions.

These include:

Lymphedema. A long-term or a chronic condition in which excess fluid collects in tissues, causing swelling or edema. Edema mainly occurs in the legs or arms. Liposuction is used to reduce discomfort, swelling, and pain.

Lipodystrophy syndrome. Fat collects in one part of the body and is lost in another. Liposuction can provide the patient’s more natural-looking body fat distribution.

Extreme weight loss after obesity. A person with obesity and loses about 40 percent of their BMI may need treatment to remove excess skin and other fat abnormalities.

How long does liposuction take?

Liposuction surgery takes one to two hours. It depends on the size of the treated area. It’s done as an outpatient procedure, meaning that a person should go home the same day after surgery.

Recovery time is only a few days. Follow your provider’s recommendations for quick recovery, which may include limiting activities and wearing a special bandage. It may take several months to see full results as the swelling goes down.

Risks of liposuction

Contour irregularities. Your skin may appear wavy, withered, or bumpy because of uneven fat removal, unusual healing, and low skin elasticity. The changes may be permanent. Damage beneath the skin from the cannula used during liposuction may give the skin a spotted appearance.

Fluid accumulation. Temporary fluid pockets can form under the skin. This fluid may need to be drained with a needle.

Internal puncture. A cannula that penetrates deeply may puncture internal organs. This may require immediate surgical repair.

Fat embolism. Some lost fats may break and become trapped in a blood vessel, then gather in the lungs or travel to the brain. Fat embolism is a medical emergency.

Lidocaine toxicity.  Lidocaine is an anesthetic administered during liposuction to manage the pain. Lidocaine toxicity occurs, but in rare cases, causing heart and central nervous system problems.

Liposuction is an effective cosmetic procedure that has significant risks. It’s not usually a substitute for weight loss and is not suitable for everyone. Make sure before surgery, you meet with a certified plastic surgeon and discuss the risks and complications of the procedure.
